Who can Adopt?
All kinds of people from all sorts of different backgrounds can adopt.
We welcome enquiries from married or unmarried couples who have a stable long term relationship and who have made a life long commitment to one another, and we also welcome enquiries from single people. What is important is that adopters are positively motivated and able to meet the needs of children and provide a stable, loving home.
Adopters need to reside in the UK but do not need to own their own home and can live in a house or a flat. Adopters do not need to be well off, can be unemployed, can have children of their own, or be childless. There is a legal requirement that people must be aged over 21 years to adopt; there is no upper age limit.
People who have committed a criminal offence against a child will not be allowed to adopt. Apart from the above restrictions, anyone can ask to be assessed as an adopter, regardless of marital status, disability, gender, religion, or sexual orientation.
