CrossHill

Teenagers with birthday cake

CrossHill, a youth café project, was launched in Banklands, Workington on All Saint’s Day 2008, thanks to the generous funding of the Benedictine community which was anxious to sustain some positive activity for young people in the area. The project is situated in the parish hall of Our Lady of the Sea and St Michael. An average of 42 young people attends over three evenings each week.

The project is called CrossHill in recognition of a historic site at the top of a nearby hill now commemorated by a cross design built into the exterior wall of a house which identifies the spot where, in former times, permission was sought for funeral corteges to cross the local boundary. It is also reputedly a location where St Cuthbert’s monks laid his mortal remains as they journeyed through the north of England fleeing the Viking invaders.
