CrossTracks
The title of the project 'CrossTracks’ was inspired by the ecumenical nature of the project which involves active participation from the local Methodist, Anglican and Catholic churches. Also, the town of Maryport is divided in two by a railway line and the name ‘CrossTracks suggests a reaching out to bring the local community closer together.
This project was launched in 2004 and provides a range of activities for 8-12 year olds and over 55s at various locations in Maryport. For the youngsters we provide after-school, youth and holiday clubs and, in co-operation with a local school, a gardening club has also been established. In addition to these regular activities special outdoor activities are organised from time to time for the young people of Ewanrigg and the surrounding area.
For older people there is a ‘coffee and chat’ group, two weekly food co-ops, one at the Ewanrigg and Netherton Community Centre where Crosstracks is based and one in the town centre, a bereavement support group, and an oral history group. The centre’s Community Café is available to the local community and for special events. The Ewanrigg Centre also operates a Target Well-being project (health and well being for older people).
One exiting recent development, a weekly youth club and monthly disco for young people with learning disabilities, has proved very popular with over 30 young people attending, supported by 2 centre staff and a small team of brilliant volunteers. A Monday night support group for carers and family members is also proving popular and a useful information sharing forum.
