Wesham Interact
Wesham Interact is a project mainly for people aged 55+, many over 70, from the Wesham area of the Fylde in Lancashire.
The aim is to reduce the isolation that is sometimes associated with older age by encouraging involvement in the community through providing access to leisure, learning, information and social opportunities through a variety of activities, classes and inter-generational sub-projects.
The three principles on which the project is based are:
- People taking part
- Learning to find ways of working for themselves
- Being involved with the local community
The work is conducted in partnership with three local Primary Schools, the High School and the Adult Learning College who offer IT and gardening classes. There are also opportunities to take part in water-colour painting, music to movement, and various computer courses. The lunch club is also very popular with over 30 older people attending every Tuesday and a number of trips to various locations are arranged throughout the year.
Wesham Interact is now hoping to embark upon a new oral history project in partnership with the University of Central Lancashire. We also work in partnership with the Wesham Community Centre, existing providers for older people such as Age (UK) Age Concern and Help the Aged, the wider community, and also other statutory and voluntary organisations.
Last year new courses were introduced thanks to an injection of fresh funding. Happily, courses such as Art & Craft and , Pictures on your PC have retained their place on the curriculum of the projecta. By widening the scope of the learning opportunites on offer to the client group, we hope to inspire other funders to support new courses in the future.
