Not at one point throughout the whole process did we ever feel judged or criticised for being in a same sex relationship, which made myself and my partner feel at ease. So, don’t worry about that, it’s not even an issue, everyone was very supportive and understood how much we wanted a family of our own.

I don’t mind admitting I was nervous. Suppose I didn’t take to her. But I needn’t have worried. Little Pink was fast asleep in her buggy. She was beautiful and I couldn’t take my eyes off her, wanted to touch her hair, stroke her cheek. She was my granddaughter!

Having support in the home was so important to myself and my daughter. I needed carers that listened to me and learnt, had compassion and gave me the confidence so I could step back and know that my daughter was being cared for and having a really good life.

To any potential LGBT adopters, sometimes you may go into this thinking: ‘Oh we’re going to get a real grilling or going to have to through some extra processes because we’re a same-sex couple’ compared to a heterosexual couple but that’s just not the case.

We saw a few changes in management but I have nothing but respect and praise for the support that my daughter received. I knew I did rant a few times but that was frustration and I hope I was forgiven even sometimes stepping over the line.

After their visit to us, we knew we weren’t going to go with anyone else. Caritas Care have been a brilliant support to us from day one. I can ring up anytime and because it’s not a huge faceless agency, I know all the social workers and all the support staff.

My daughter certainly had some wonderful carers who were dedicated and devoted to her needs.

We both feel like we gained a friend in our social worker, as she’s been there with us throughout the process and probably knows more about us than a lot of our friends. For us, our social worker was like our cheerleader, rooting for us from day one.
