Meet David

David has been a valued volunteer at Plungington Community Centre for the past few years, contributing his time and energy to the community café.

His journey into volunteering began when he found himself spending too much time at home, watching television and feeling unmotivated. Recognising that he needed a change, David decided to take a step forward and get involved in his local community.

“I was just sitting at home all the time. I was getting lazy, so I decided to get out and try something new.”

With support from a staff member who helped him through the DBS check process, David began volunteering at the centre 3 years ago and has been a regular face ever since.

David helps out in the community café, a role he thoroughly enjoys. The café can be busy at times, but he takes it all in his stride.

“Sometimes it’s really busy, and sometimes it’s quiet, but that’s good too. It gives us time to do other jobs, like checking the fridge and freezer temperatures or tidying up.”

Whether he’s serving customers, tidying the kitchen, or checking on safety standards, David approaches every task with commitment and care.

One of the most rewarding aspects of volunteering for David is the social interaction. He says, “I love talking to people. That’s the most important thing for me, customer care and getting people talking. It’s really good.”

The café isn’t just about food and drinks; it’s a space for connection, conversation, and community  and David plays a big part in creating that welcoming environment.

Volunteering has given David a new sense of purpose and routine, which he says has helped him grow personally and feel more independent.

“It gives you a bit of a routine and purpose. I get out of the house, come here, and I feel good. The team is brilliant, we work together and it feels like we’re all on the same page.”

David has found belonging and value through teamwork, describing the experience as motivating and supportive. He says, “Teamwork makes the dream work!”

When asked what he would say to someone thinking about volunteering, David encourages them to give it a try, especially those who might be nervous or unsure. He says, “Don’t be nervous, just get out and do it. You get freedom, you learn to be your own person. It’s helped me think outside the box and grow.”

When summarising his experience, David didn’t hesitate. “If I had to describe it in one word? Excellent.”

David’s story is a shining example of how volunteering can provide structure, confidence, and connection, not just for the individual, but for the community as a whole.
