Freddy has been a dedicated volunteer at the Plungington Community Centre Café for around five to six years. His friendly smile and cheerful nature have made him a well-loved part of the team, and a familiar face to everyone who visits.
“I’ve been here about five or six years now,” he says proudly.
Freddy lives in supported living with Caritas Care. He first expressed an interest in volunteering because he wanted to be more involved in the community, meet new people, and build his skills – especially in a place that, as he puts it, “feels like home.”
When it came to choosing where to volunteer, the café was a natural fit for Freddy’s personality and passions.
“I just wanted to do some volunteering – and I chose the café.”
Freddy loves being around others, and his warm, welcoming nature makes him a perfect fit for a customer-facing role. But there’s another reason the café was the right choice: his love of cooking.
Over the years, Freddy has built up his confidence in the kitchen, learning practical skills and contributing to the café team in a big way. Ask anyone, and they’ll tell you—Freddy makes an excellent poached egg!
“They’re not easy to do – but if you’ve mastered that one, you’re doing alright!”
Freddy’s time at the café has been about much more than just tea and toast. Volunteering has given him a strong sense of purpose, boosted his confidence, and helped him gain more independence.
He’s picked up valuable skills, including maths and kitchen tasks, and has even started cooking at home for his housemates—something he enjoys and takes pride in.
“It helps me learn how to do things for everybody as well.”
What Freddy enjoys most about volunteering, though, is the people he works with. The team at Plungington Community Centre has become like a second family to him.
When asked what he enjoys most, he smiles and says,“Ben, Emma, Hazel, and Chris.”
The support and fun of the team have played a big role in making Freddy’s volunteering experience so special.
Would He Recommend Volunteering? “Yeah!” He says.
Freddy’s story is a great example of how volunteering can be a positive and empowering experience for someone with a learning disability. It can boost confidence, build independence, develop new skills, and make life more fulfilling and enjoyable.
