Meet Tony

When Tony first came to Vincent House as a resident, he never imagined he’d become such an important part of the team. But today, he’s not just a familiar face, he’s family.

Tony started volunteering during his time as a resident, simply by helping out where he could. “There were days the kitchen was short-staffed, so I just got stuck in. I helped prep lunches and teas, sometimes even cooked the whole dinner. It just kind of started from there.”

In 2020, while still living at Vincent House, Tony suffered a heart attack and underwent a double bypass. “If I hadn’t been here when it happened… I wouldn’t be here at all,” he shared. “That’s why I wanted to give something back. The support I received was incredible, it meant a lot.”

Now, Tony volunteers three days a week, helping with shopping, kitchen support, and odd jobs around the house. His routine is flexible, but consistent, and gives him something he values deeply – purpose.

It keeps me going,” he says. “I’ve got health issues, I’m not fit enough for work, but volunteering keeps me active. It gives me a reason to get out, stay mentally and physically engaged, and feel useful.”

Tony finds great satisfaction in knowing his contribution matters. “There’ve been weekends where I’ve come in to cook tea because no one else could. It feels good to be needed. I might not be working, but I’m still making a difference.”

For Tony, the benefits of volunteering are twofold, he’s helping others, and he’s helping himself. “It’s given me confidence and structure. I’ve even been able to pick up some new skills and get involved in bits of painting, decorating, and maintenance too.”

When asked what advice he’d give to someone thinking about volunteering, Tony is clear: “Find something you’ll enjoy. If it makes you feel good, it’s worth doing. It’s not just about giving to others, it helps you too.”

Colette, Manager at Vincent House, summed it up beautifully. “Tony is part of our family now. We don’t know what we’d do without him. He’s a huge help around the house and we are proud to have been part of his journey and also very grateful for the help and support he gives us.”

Tony’s story is a powerful reminder that with the right support and a generous heart, it’s possible to turn things around and create something meaningful.
