Celebrating 20 Years of Movement and Friendship at Plungington Community Centre

Plungington Community Centre is celebrating a remarkable milestone this month as its much-loved Yoga Groove class turns 20. Run by Helen Frost (pictured left with Agnes and colleague Grace Barritt right), the class continues to bring movement, music and meaningful connection to the heart of the community and at the centre of it all is Agnes, still dancing her way through life in her 90s!

Agnes – Still Dancing Strong in Her 90s

Agnes has been a part of the Yoga Groove journey since day one. She joined the class shortly after her 70th birthday during what she describes as a challenging time in her life. A flyer from Age Concern introduced her to the group, which she says has been life-changing.

“I only lived a few streets away and thought I’d give it a try,” recalls Agnes, a retired ballet and dance teacher. “There were just three of us at the start. Now there are around 20 people coming every week. It keeps me going. I’ve made so many friends, and dancing keeps me fit, healthy and happy. I feel looked after and loved.”

Now in her 90s, Agnes is proof that staying active at any age makes a big difference. In fact, her doctor recently told her she has the bone health of someone half her age, something she credits entirely to her regular dancing and yoga routine.

What Is Yoga Groove?

Yoga Groove is an inclusive fitness class combining gentle seated yoga and lively dance, all set to feel-good music. It was created to support people of all ages and abilities in staying active, connected and mentally well.

Led by Helen Frost, the weekly session begins with 20 minutes of seated yoga to warm up, followed by 30 minutes of upbeat dancing, then finishes with a cool-down to bring the energy back down.

“The aim is to keep people fit and well as they age,” says Helen. “But more than that, it’s about connection, joy and having fun. Agnes is a shining example—you’re never too old to move, dance and enjoy life.”

Hosted at Plungington Community Centre in Preston, Yoga Groove is part of a wider programme of activities offered by Caritas Care to support health, wellbeing and community connection across the region.

With two decades of fun, fitness and friendship behind it, Yoga Groove remains a lifeline for many local people, helping to combat loneliness and support healthy ageing.

Join the Fun at Plungington Community Centre: Yoga Groove runs every Monday from 10am to 11am at Plungington Community Centre. The session costs just £4 and no booking is required – simply turn up, join in, and enjoy. After the session, attendees are welcome to stay for a cuppa and lunch at the on-site café.
