Meet Maddi from FX

Meet Maddi and family

Maddi’s parents, Caroline and Scott, talk about their experiences of Caritas Care’s FX Service and the difference it has made to Maddi and their family.

Getting to know Maddi

Maddi has a “bubbly personality” and loves being around people. She is very sociable, enjoys being outdoors and loves joining in with activities at FX, including singing and sensory sessions.

Maddi has cerebral palsy, global developmental delay and scoliosis. She is non-verbal but communicates through signing, hand movements and eye contact.

Finding the right support after school

After finishing school, the transition to a new routing was difficult for her family, with Caroline describing it as “a bit scary”.

FX was recommended by Maddi’s school, and after visiting the service, Caroline and Scott knew they had found the right place.

They said, “FX was the first place we actually came and had a look at, and we just didn’t even want to look at any other place. We just fell in love with it straight away.”

Settling into life at FX

Maddi now attends FX five days a week and has quickly settled into her new routine. She comes home tired after a busy day, but soon returns to her usual energetic and bubbly self.

“She gets off the transport bus and I know, ‘you’ve had a good day, haven’t you?’” Says Caroline.

In fact, Maddi is often so happy at FX that she doesn’t want to leave.

“When we go the FX events, she thinks we’re there to take her home and we have to say, ‘It’s OK, you can stay, we’re not taking you home!’”

For Caroline and Scott, FX has also provided valuable respite and the chance to spend more time with each other and their other three daughters.

While Maddi is enjoying her time at FX, Caroline can get things done at home and have some time for herself.

“It gives us a bit of free time, a bit of respite, which is nice. And knowing Maddi’s at FX, I can get quite a lot done in the house,” says Caroline.

The support goes beyond Maddi’s time at the service. Staff have also helped the family with appointments and practical issues, including support with Maddi’s wheelchair and feeding tube.

Most importantly, Caroline and Scott say they know they have made the right decision.

“It’s the best thing we’re ever done for her.”

Caroline and Scott’s advice to other parents considering FX is, “Have a look round. You’ll be amazed. You’ll just fall in love with the staff and the place. Don’t hesitate.”
