Our Adoptive Family: Granny & Grandad

When we heard we would be grandparents, we couldn’t wait to meet my daughter and son-in-law’s two adopted children.

Of course, we were anxious about whether we would do the right thing.

We were worried about whether our daughter and husband would bond with the children and whether the children would bond with us, after the initial excitement of their arrival.

We also wondered whether they would be able to cope being thrown in at the deep end with two young children, how would they manage with the tiredness, nappy changing etc?

We also thought about the long term view — how would we all cope when or if the children wanted to contact their birth parents in the future?

However, all our anxieties proved unnecessary and we needn’t have worried – the children have settled in to their new home very well and they’ve bonded well with their parents as well as us grandparents.

Everyone is much more relaxed, the house is full of activities and love, and the boys are developing well at school and pre-school.

Although it has been a bit of a roller coaster at times, I can definitely say it was the best decision my daughter and son-in-law made to adopt not one but two children together.

We as grandparents have been overjoyed to take part in the journey as we live so near, and we can see just how happy the children are in their new family environment.

The boys have hugely enriched all our lives and have already made a big impact on our family.

The children bonded particularly well with Grandad and they love a biscuit treat from Granny!

Our favourite moments so far include: the boys shrieking with laughter whilst playing with the hose pipe on the allotment with Grandad; hearing them chattering away together on a train journey, giggling with us whilst watching Disney films and enjoying splashing each other during bath time and a sleepover at our house.

We also enjoyed taking them to Morecambe adventure playground, looking for worms in the garden and dancing round the table to music.

We’ve already made so many precious memories with our grandchildren and we’re looking forward to making many many more in the future!
