Local Catholic women, many with independent means, came together to open orphanages to house homeless children and protect women and children in danger. These groups were excellent at networking and fundraising, quickly realising that working with the Catholic Church helped secure funds and manage large institutions. St Vincent’s Orphanage in Preston and St Catherine’s Orphanage in Liverpool, which housed up to 700 children between them, were among the results of their efforts.
