A new, much larger maternity home for unmarried mothers was established in Lancaster. Young women were referred by their parents or local Parish Priests to the Administrators and the Mother Superior. They were allowed to stay at Nazareth House during the final stages of pregnancy for six weeks after giving birth. Due to the strong social stigma against single motherhood at the time most of these babies were placed for adoption and the mothers returned home.
