Preston Guild celebrations first came about in 1179, as an organisation of traders and craftsmen all with trades prominent in the town. Gatherings to renew membership to the Guild took place every 20 years, when large numbers of people congregated for feasting, processions and great social gatherings. The Guild adapted to change after the war by encouraging participation of community groups. The Charity has participated in Guild processions ever since.
