Do you see me?

Learning Disability Week 2026 – Do you see me? Yes, we do.

At Caritas Care, Learning Disabilities Week is a chance to celebrate individuality, challenge perceptions and highlight the importance of truly seeing the people we support – their strengths, talents and aspirations.

This year’s theme, “Do you see me”, is reflected across our services every day, where people are supported to fulfilling lives, build confidence and achieve outcomes that matter to them.

Whether through developing life skills, taking part in meaningful activities, or building independence at home and in the community, the people we support are encouraged to shape their own lives in ways that reflect who they are and what they want to achieve.

Supporting independence and opportunity

Laura King, Supported Living Services Manager, said “Independence looks different for everyone. Our role is to support people to build confidence in their own skills, make choices about their lives and feel genuinely valued for who they are. When we take time to really see the person, we see so much more than a diagnosis, we see personality, humour, creativity and strength.”

Martin Heneghan, Learning Disabilities Day Services Manager, added “Learning Disability Week is about visibility and voice. Every person we support has their own unique interests, abilities and goals, and our job is to create the right environment for those to flourish. It’s about listening, adapting and making sure people have real opportunities to thrive in ways that matter to them.”

Seeing the person, not the label

Across our services, we remain committed to promoting independence, inclusion, chances, choices and opportunities for people with learning disabilities and autism. We continue to focus on strengths, not limitations and on what people can do, not what they can’t.

Because when we truly see people, we don’t define them by a label, we recognise their individuality, potential and the value they bring to the world around them.
