St. Vincent’s Orphanage expanded with a new wing, increasing capacity to 350 boys. This year also marked the first intake of boys from the Preston Union (workhouse). Other Catholic institutions opened: Nazareth House, Lancaster (1901); Loretto House, Preston, for young women (1904); St. Margaret’s Hostel for Working Girls, Preston (1905); Moorfield Orphanage for Girls (1905).
These institutions were all staffed by nuns from various Catholic Orders.
