In the midst of World War II, the Beveridge Report outlined the ‘Five Giant Evils’ (Want, Disease, Ignorance, Squalor, Idleness), which stood in the way of post-war reconstruction. It set the foundation for reforms such as the National Insurance scheme and universal healthcare. Whilst these reforms were implemented after 1945, charities played a crucial role in continuing to provide services during the transition, often working in partnership with the State.
